Houses built in the years of the construction boom are prone to having
Chinese Drywall in them. Any home built between 2001 and 2008 SHOULD be
checked for Chinese Drywall. The defective
drywall was allegedly in Virginia in 2001. Chinese
Drywall off gasses hydrogen sulfide, which coats metals with a black
residue. This gives off a very distinctive smell, which resembles burnt
matches. This black residue has caused new AC units to fail within 2
years. This may also become a fire hazard. Health effects to exposure to
Chinese Drywall are unknown. The problem is most predominant in Florida. Here
is a link to a Florida Department of Health
Case Definition. The document contains some very good pictures of
affected components. Other mformative sites are
http://www.cpsc.gov/info/drywall/index.html and
www.chinesedrywall.com There are currently no nationally accepted
standards or protocols for on site toxic drywall testing. However,
AccuSpec inspectors are Certified by the Exterior Design Institute of
Norfolk, Va to perform both visual inspections AND chemical analysis to
reveal suspected toxic drywall.
